How a 1-on-1 lesson works
1-on-1 lessons are live online video lessons of 45 minutes, with only your child and Teacher Matt. The content is built around your child’s level and goal: the trial lesson shows exactly where your child is, and that is where lessons start, so they will not be left behind and will not sit through things they already know.
- Time: between 2:00 and 9:00 PM, Monday to Saturday, with 1-on-1 slots set around your child’s routine.
- Ages and level: ages 5 to 18, any level welcome, from beginner to C2.
- Before and after: materials sent digitally before class, personalized feedback after it.
- Equipment: a computer or tablet with a camera and microphone, plus stable internet.
How 1-on-1 targets the exams
- Cambridge Young Learners: Starters, Movers and Flyers have no pass mark; results come as shields. Cambridge says four or five shields in every paper means a child can start preparing for the next Cambridge English Qualification. For how to read them, see what the YLE shields mean.
- KET, PET and FCE: results are reported as Cambridge English Scale scores, and a Grade A earns a certificate at the level above. In these exams, which do have a pass mark, every PLI student has passed to date. For the score bands, see Cambridge exam levels, Starters to C2.
- Study-abroad tests: TOEFL, SAT and the Duolingo English Test. Kevin prepared for the Duolingo English Test in 1-on-1 lessons. See TOEFL and SAT courses.

Start with a free trial lesson
The free 45-minute trial lesson is itself a full level assessment. Afterwards, Teacher Matt tells you which level fits your child now, how far they are from the target and what to work on first, along with what the lessons and fees would look like; whether you carry on is up to you. One LINE message books it, and he usually replies the same day. Because Teacher Matt teaches every lesson himself, places are limited; if a slot is full, you can join the waitlist.
Questions parents ask
Which children is 1-on-1 best for?
Children with a clear target suit it best: an exam in three months, a school application abroad, international school admission interviews and curriculum support, or a specific weakness to fix. The whole lesson revolves around your child. On a budget, or if your child loves learning with peers, a group class (max 4) is also a very good option.
How are 1-on-1 lessons scheduled?
Lessons run Monday to Saturday, 2:00 to 9:00 PM, 45 minutes each, and 1-on-1 slots are set around your child’s routine. Book a slot on LINE (@874xtara).
How much does 1-on-1 cost?
It depends on your child’s level and goal, so there is no single price on the website. Start with the free 45-minute trial lesson; once Teacher Matt has confirmed your child’s level he will give you a recommendation and the fee, and you decide from there.
My child is a complete beginner. Can they take 1-on-1?
Yes, no prior English is needed. PLI takes ages 5 to 18, from absolute beginner right through to FCE and TOEFL. The trial lesson shows exactly where your child is, and that is where lessons start: they will not be left behind, and they will not sit through things they already know.
Do we have to sign a long-term contract?
No. There are no lock-in contracts and no cancellation fees, and families can adjust or pause lessons at any time. Students stay more than three years on average, and what keeps them is visible weekly progress, not a contract.
