Cambridge Exams vs GEPT — Comparison and Level Chart
Both are legitimate exams. They just weren’t designed for the same child. Here is the level chart, the real differences, and which exam suits which age — plus one limitation nobody mentions before you register.
Level chart: CEFR, Cambridge and GEPT
Both exams map to the international CEFR framework, so they can be compared directly:

The thing nobody tells you before you register
Under about 10, GEPT has no suitable level
GEPT’s lowest level is Elementary, which sits at CEFR A2. For a third- or fourth-grader who has only just started English, that isn’t “a bit high” — it means skipping two whole stages, Pre-A1 and A1. It can be done. But the preparation tends to grind down a child’s confidence, and once that goes, every later exam gets harder.
Cambridge YLE was designed for exactly this age. Starters begins at Pre-A1, and there is no pass or fail — results come as shields, up to five per paper. What the child brings home is “I did it,” not a report card that spoils the evening.
Cambridge certificates never expire
A Cambridge pass is permanent. For a child working up from primary school to high school, each certificate stacks on the last instead of resetting every few years.
The score report isn’t a single number, either. Listening, speaking, reading and writing are reported separately, so you can see exactly which skill is ahead and which needs work.
How to choose — three common situations
Younger children (5–10)
Start with Cambridge YLE Starters or Movers. The goal isn’t the certificate — it’s a positive first exam experience and confidence in listening and speaking.
Junior/senior high, staying in Taiwan
Either works. If the school specifically asks for GEPT, take GEPT. If not, KET/PET/FCE carry broader international recognition and never expire.
International school or studying abroad
Cambridge is the clearer fit. If the goal is a US university, the next step is TOEFL, SAT or the Duolingo English Test.

Parents Often Ask
Which is better, the Cambridge exams or GEPT?
Neither is simply better — they were built for different purposes. GEPT serves Taiwan’s domestic system, while the Cambridge exams are recognized internationally and never expire. For children under about ten, Cambridge YLE is effectively the only option: GEPT’s lowest level, Elementary, sits at CEFR A2, which would mean skipping the Pre-A1 and A1 stages entirely.
What Cambridge level is GEPT Elementary equivalent to?
GEPT Elementary sits at CEFR A2 — the same level as Cambridge Flyers and KET. GEPT Intermediate corresponds to B1, the level of PET, and GEPT High-Intermediate to B2, the level of FCE.
Do Cambridge English results expire?
No. A Cambridge pass is permanent — YLE, KET, PET and FCE certificates all remain valid for life, and there’s no need to retake an exam to keep it current. For a child moving up level by level, each certificate stacks on the last.
