Cambridge Exams vs GEPT: Comparison and Level Chart
Both are legitimate exams. They just weren’t designed for the same child. Here is the level chart, the real differences, and which exam suits which age, plus one limitation nobody mentions before you register.
Level chart: CEFR, Cambridge and GEPT
Both exams map to the international CEFR framework, so they can be compared directly:

Mapping follows Taiwan’s Ministry of Education CEFR alignment for recognised English qualifications. *GEPT Kids (小學英檢) is a separate test for primary-school children from LTTC, the organisation that runs GEPT. It is not divided into levels, and the approximate A1 is LTTC’s own description.

The chart is clear. But where does your child sit on it?

The thing nobody tells you before you register
Under about 10, GEPT itself has no suitable level
GEPT’s lowest level is Elementary, which sits at CEFR A2. For a third- or fourth-grader who has only just started English, that isn’t “a bit high”: it means skipping two whole stages, Pre-A1 and A1. It can be done. But the preparation tends to grind down a child’s confidence, and once that goes, every later exam gets harder.
LTTC, which runs GEPT, also offers a separate test for primary-school children, GEPT Kids (小學英檢). It sits at roughly CEFR A1, reports results as a number of suns rather than a level, and leads on to GEPT Elementary. The difference from Cambridge YLE is that YLE has three levels, Starters, Movers and Flyers, running from Pre-A1 to A2, and is an international Cambridge certificate. Cambridge YLE was also designed for this age. Starters begins at Pre-A1, and there is no pass or fail: results come as shields, up to five per paper. What the child brings home is “I did it,” not a report card that spoils the evening.
Cambridge certificates themselves don’t expire
A Cambridge certificate does not expire. For a child working up from primary school to high school, each certificate stacks on the last instead of resetting every few years. That said, Cambridge’s own guidance notes that some schools and institutions only accept certificates from the last two to three years, so for a school application, go by that school’s rules.
The score report isn’t a single number, either. Listening, speaking, reading and writing are reported separately, so you can see exactly which skill is ahead and which needs work.
How to choose: three common situations
Younger children (5–10)
Start with Cambridge YLE Starters or Movers. The goal isn’t the certificate. It’s a positive first exam experience and confidence in listening and speaking.
Junior/senior high, staying in Taiwan
Either works. If the school specifically asks for GEPT, take GEPT. If not, KET/PET/FCE carry broader international recognition, and the certificates themselves don’t expire (though some schools only accept results from the last two to three years).
International school or studying abroad
Cambridge is the clearer fit. If the goal is a US university, the next step is TOEFL, SAT or the Duolingo English Test.

Parents Often Ask
Which is better, the Cambridge exams or GEPT?
Neither is simply better: they were built for different purposes. GEPT serves Taiwan’s domestic system, while the Cambridge exams are recognized internationally, and the certificates themselves don’t expire (though some schools only accept results from the last two to three years). For children under about ten, note that GEPT itself starts at Elementary, which sits at CEFR A2, so a younger child would be skipping the Pre-A1 and A1 stages. LTTC, which runs GEPT, also offers GEPT Kids (小學英檢), a separate test for primary-school children at roughly CEFR A1 with no levels. Cambridge YLE has three levels, Pre-A1, A1 and A2, and is an international Cambridge certificate.
What Cambridge level is GEPT Elementary equivalent to?
GEPT Elementary sits at CEFR A2, the same level as Cambridge Flyers and KET. GEPT Intermediate corresponds to B1, the level of PET, and GEPT High-Intermediate to B2, the level of FCE.
Do Cambridge English results expire?
The certificates themselves have no expiry date, which is an important difference from some other tests: for a child moving up level by level, each YLE, KET, PET or FCE certificate stacks on the last. That said, Cambridge’s own guidance notes that some schools and institutions only accept certificates from the last two to three years. If a KET, PET or FCE result is for a school application, check how recent the school needs it to be; if the certificate is too old, your child may need to sit the exam again.
